| ANNOTATION

The sequel to the successful film Fimfárum by Jan Werich. Four brand new stories “for clever children and clever adults” from the popular book written by Jan Werich. Břetislav Pojar introduces the story of little Tom Thumb full of twists and adventure. Aurel Klimt brings to life three brothers, The Hunchbacks of Damascus, re-creating the atmosphere of the Middle East and variety of the oriental storytelling. Vlasta Pospíšilová’s Three Sisters and One Ring shows a rural Decameron-like manual on how to enchant one’s loved ones with a mere ring and Jan Balej lets his characters Marek and Kouba re-live an ancient fairy-tale about greed, devils and natural phenomena in his The Sea, Uncle, Why is it Salty?

It would take more than a year to film a classical feature animated film in our conditions but in this case, when the film was shot by four separate crews in four studios, the production took less than a year (but if we were to combine the work of all the studios, we would be close to three years). On the other hand, as Jára Cimrman said: “When you are planning an expedition to the North Pole, don’t forget to double the supplies” – in our case even quadruple. In total, the film includes almost a hundred different puppets and 50 to 60 different backgrounds. As far as animated films go, we could even use the term epic.

A professional approach by all co-production and technology partners was absolutely essential for our project as we tried to work with a completely new, previously untested technology of digital recording by digital cameras and computers. It was only in the final stages of image post-production when we recorded the digital footage onto a film negative (UPP) with a subsequent classical processing in the film laboratories of Czech Television.
